接続語の意味と使い方をマスターして、話したり、書いたりする時に使っていきましょう。

1)         Resultative – a conjunction placed at the beginning of a sentence that indicates what follows is a direct result of information in the previous sentence：したがって(consequently)、すると(thereupon)、そこで(accordingly)、そのため(for that reason)、それで(because of that)、だから(therefore)
坊ちゃんは単純(たんじゅん)だ。だから、だまされやすい。
[cause/reason/situation]  =>  [effect/result]

2)         Reverse polarity(‘but’)：けれども、しかし、そのくせ (even so; for all that)、ところが(on the contrary)、だが、でも、とは言うものの (having said that)

あまりお金はなかった。しかし、５円の茶代をあげた。(2章コマ19)

とは言うものの、下宿先(げしゅくさき)のあてはない (7章コマ3)

3)         Parallel relationship (‘and’): および、ならびに、また、
漱石(そうせき)は教師であり、また、作家(さっか)であった（＝作家であり、教師であった）。

4)         Additives (‘in addition’)：さらに、しかも、そして、そのうえ、それに、など (etc.)
生徒はふとんの中にバッタを入れた。その上、二階の部屋で騒(さわ)いだ。(4章)

5)         Selected (‘or’)：あるいは (possibly)、または、それとも (or else)、もしくは (otherwise)
山嵐が親切な人なのか、あるいは、裏表(うらおもて)のある悪い奴(やつ)なのかわからなくなった。

6)         Conversion (‘to change the subject’)：ところで (by the way)、さて (well)、では (then)、それでは (well then)、ときに (by the way)

ところで、坊ちゃんは釣(つ)りをしたことがありますか。

7)         Description：
a. Paraphrasing：言い換(か)えると(to say in other words)、すなわち(that is)、つまり(in short)、要(よう)するに(the point is …)

生徒のほうが背(せ)が高い。つまり、坊ちゃんは背が低(ひく)いということである。
Students are taller than Botchan. In other words, Botchan is short.

b. Introducing additional information: ただし (provided that)、ちなみに (in this connection)、
もっとも(but then)、なお (furthermore)
天ぷらそばは食べてもいい。ただし、2杯(はい)までにしておくこと。
You may eat tempura soba noodles provided that you have no more than two bowls.

c. Giving examples: 例(たと)えば

坊っちゃんは食べ物が大好きだ。例えば、天ぷらや団子などだ。

d. Providing reasons：と言うのは (this means that)、なぜなら／なぜならば (it is because)、なぜかと言うと・なぜかと言えば (the reason why is)、どうしてかと言うと・どうしてかと言えば (The reason why ~)

あなたはだまされやすい。なぜなら、どんな人が悪い人かがわからないからだ。
